The Cocktail Hour

November 9-13

This satirical comedy explores the manners and values of an overly-privileged, Northeastern family during the 1970’s. Part-time playwright, John announces he has written a play he has entitled “The Cocktail Hour,” but his family is not happy to hear the news.   Knowing that all of John’s scripts are autobiographical, John’s father, Bradley, fears it will cast the family in a bad light. His mother, Ann, would rather he just write a book. His sister, Nina, takes insult at not receiving a larger role. Over cocktails, domestic battles slide into hilarious inebriation.

Harvey

February 23-26

This 1944 Pulitzer prize-winning comedy revolves around the character Elwood P. Dowd, an affable man with a bit of a drinking problem, who claims to have an unseen (and presumably imaginary) friend named “Harvey” — whom Elwood describes as a six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch tall pooka resembling an anthropomorphic rabbit. Elwood introduces Harvey to everyone he meets. His social-climbing sister, Veta, increasingly finds his eccentric behavior embarrassing. She decides to have him committed to a sanitarium to spare her daughter Myrtle Mae and their family from future embarrassment. When they arrive at the sanitarium, a comedy of rather extreme errors ensues. After all is straightened out, it seems that the mild-mannered Elwood’s delusion has had a strange influence on the staff.

Note:  James Stewart starred in the 1950 movie version.
